![]() ![]() Since Razmik, who is only interested in prostitutes who have a penis, is to some extend obsessed with Sin-Dee, one could assume that Sin-Dee belongs to Borstein’s third suggested group of “non-operative” trans people, meaning transsexuals who don’t opt for the genital surgery. Chester, who sees women as his “merchandise” for his prostitution business, is in a relationship with Sin-Dee, which in the eyes of a cisgender woman Dinah makes him a “fag”. In addition to representing trans women, Tangerine creates tension around the ideas of male heteronormativity through the representations of Chester and Razmik. It is refreshing to see varying representations of a group of people that are often highly stereotyped and thus treated more as a caricatures than human beings. While Sin-Dee is impulsive and prone to drama, Alexandra seems more calm and collected. While both Sin-Dee and Alexandra are trans women working as prostitutes in Los Angeles, it would be hard to pin them down to just one stereotypical trait of representation it is also interesting to that even though they share the same location and a socio-economic setting, their identities are VERY different from each other. Also, due to the unconventional nature of the production of the film (shot with three iPhone 5s smartphones, one could argue that Tangerine is queerness reaches beyond the limits of its narrative by representing a production model different from the norm of Hollywood/American indie production. Throughout the film, tensions around the ideas of normative and queer are present and it could be argued that there are several elements found from the film which constitute as queer, from the identities of Sin-Dee and Alexandra to the way Chester and Razmik, an Armenian cab driver, are portrayed. ![]() Baker and starring Kitana Kiki (Sin-Dee) and May Taylor (Alexandra) centers around the lives of two transgender sex workers who walk through the streets of the “shady” side of Los Angeles in order to find Chester, their pimp/Sin-Dee’s boyfriend. ![]()
